Boat Winterization

Don't Let Winter Take a Toll on Your Boat

As another boating season winds down here on Sandy Hook Bay, it's time to start thinking about protecting your investment for the colder months ahead. While many of us would rather be planning our next fishing trip than putting our boats away, proper winterization is one of the most important things you can do to keep your boat in good condition and ready for spring.

New Jersey winters can be unpredictable. One week we're enjoying mild temperatures, and the next we're dealing with freezing conditions. Even a brief cold snap can cause serious damage to an improperly winterized boat, leading to costly repairs and unexpected delays when boating season returns.

The biggest concern is water left inside your boat's engine, plumbing, and other systems. When water freezes, it expands, potentially cracking engine components, hoses, pumps, and fittings. Repairs can be expensive, and freeze-related damage is often excluded from insurance coverage.

Winterization involves more than simply draining water. Fuel can deteriorate during extended storage, batteries can lose their charge, and moisture trapped inside compartments can lead to mildew and corrosion. A thorough winterization process addresses these concerns so they don’t become problems. Depending on your boat's equipment and engine manufacturer's recommendations, proper preparation may include stabilizing the fuel, protecting the engine's cooling system, changing engine oil and filters, servicing the lower unit, maintaining batteries, and protecting freshwater and sanitation systems.

A Little Maintenance Now Can Save a Lot of Time and Money Later

Winter is also an ideal time to take care of routine maintenance or repairs you may have postponed during the boating season. Addressing small issues now can help prevent larger problems and reduce the chance of losing valuable time on the water next spring.

At Gateway National Marina, our factory-certified Yamaha technicians understand the importance of properly maintaining your outboard motor. As a Yamaha 5-Star Gold Full Line Sales and Service Dealer, we're equipped to help keep your engine operating at its best.

Don't Wait Until the First Freeze!

Gateway offers winterization services and winter boat storage right here in Highlands, New Jersey. Whether you're a seasonal slip holder or a local boater looking for professional service, our team can help you prepare your boat for the months ahead.

One of the most common mistakes boat owners make is waiting too long to schedule winterization. Temperatures can drop quickly, and marina service schedules fill up as the season comes to an end.
